WANTED: Media Recovery Stories

Be part of MAA history by submitting your media recovery stories to the new MAA daily reader.

We want your experience, strength, and hope! Submit a story about your first MAA meeting, fasting from media, or maybe something you discovered about yourself while doing Back to Basics. Whether you have been in the program for five years or five days, whether you are a born writer or can barely throw three sentences together, we want to hear from you! Help us create a book that shows the many voices and experiences we hear every day in our meetings. Aim for about 250-400 words. Your submission does not need to be perfect — we’ll edit your story for length and clarity, as needed.

Instructions

Write a story about your media use and recovery in MAA. Share your low points and your triumphs. You might choose one of the topic ideas below to get you started. These are, of course, just suggestions. Feel free to write whatever’s on your heart and on your mind.

Include in your story how MAA helped you in your recovery. For example, you could focus on a step, a prayer, Back to Basics, the tools of MAA, your Higher Power, a sponsor, an action partner, or MAA literature.

(Optional) Add a question or two which could be used for group discussion. When thinking about your story, what question(s) do you want others to reflect on?

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I submit my story?
You can write your story using any editing program you are comfortable with. Then, using the following link, just copy and paste in your story. Submit your story here.

How many stories can I submit?
As many as you want! We love reading your stories and welcome anything that you want to submit. We just ask that you submit one story per submission.

Can I mention specific media in my story?
You can share general activities such as scrolling or checking the news, but please refrain from mentioning specific websites, TV shows, etc. that could be triggering for someone else.

I’m not a strong writer. Can I give my story to AI and have it write something for me?
While AI is a wonderful tool, it often does not feel like authentic writing and is usually easily spotted. With an internet filled with AI-generated stories, we would prefer that this book feel real and from the heart. AI-generated stories will (probably) not be used in the final production. Regular grammar-check and spelling tools are fine.

Is my story anonymous?
Yes, the final publication will be anonymous, and we will change/remove any references where a person might be easily singled out. However, the committee members will have access to the email of the person who wrote the story. If you feel comfortable with a member contacting you with questions, you will be able to check this on the submission form.

What is the timeframe for turning in my story?

The Literature Committee has a goal to publish the new daily reader in 2026. This means we need 50 submissions a month to make this a reality. Please submit your story as soon as possible to make this new reader a reality.

Where can I get more support for my writing?

We will be creating writing workshops where we can share our stories and get feedback from others. (see writing workshops below)

I still have questions about submitting a story. Can I contact someone?

Yes! You can contact us at MAAdailyreader@gmail.com.
